Food Containing Iodine

Iodine is an important mineral in our daily diets. Iodine helps keep the immune system working well. Iodine deficiencies have been linked to several kinds of cancers, including breast cancer and stomach cancer. Iodine also prevents the growth of goiters. Knowing what foods are rich in iodine can help you have a healthy iodine-filled diet.

  1. Seafood

    • Seafood is one of the richest sources of iodine in the world. The reason for this is because the fish live in the salty water of the sea. These creatures absorb so much of that salt into their skin that it will eventually make its way into their flesh. Also, fish are just naturally high in iodine. It is one of the many nutrients that eating fish will provide. However, due to pollution, mercury has made its way into many fish species. As a result, you should minimize the fish that you eat on a weekly basis.

    Iodized Salt

    • One of the most obvious sources of iodine is iodized salt. Iodized salt is a super concentrated dose of iodine and it can be a useful way to get your iodine. Simply sprinkle a little salt on a meal or two every day and you should have your daily iodine. It can be easy to over-salt your food, however. Try not to salt every dish you eat in a day. It is easy to forget that much manufactured food already has salt in it to help preserve it while it sits on the shelves.

    Kelp

    • Kelp is an underwater plant that is high in iodine. Like fish, it spends its entire life underwater and it absorbs much of the salt in the ocean. This gives the kelp a salty flavor, to go along with its natural flavor. Kelp has become a popular dish in many Asian countries and is even becoming popular in America. It is used in dishes much like lettuce or it can be its own dish. It can be boiled for a cabbage-like food or it can be used to make salads. Kelp is a tasty and different way to get iodine into your diet.

    Strawberries

    • Not many fruits are rich in iodine. However, strawberries are a little known source of iodine. Strawberries are very low in calories and very rich with many vitamins and minerals. Iodine is a minor mineral in strawberries. However, since strawberries are so healthy, they make an excellent way to get a little iodine in your diet. You can either eat whole strawberries or you can crush them up for a topping. Strawberry short cakes are a tasty snack and are mostly healthy. A strawberry short cake after supper can help get that extra little dose of iodine into your diet.

    Yogurt

    • Yogurt is a popular healthy snack. It is the result of the fermentation of milk. It is high in nutrients, including many microbes that help boost your body's immune system. Yogurt is also a low calorie and low fat snack that has a healthy amount of iodine. Integrating yogurt into your diet is easy and tasty. Yogurt can make a good quick breakfast but also goes well with most lunches. There are many flavors and varieties of yogurt as well, from plain yogurt, to vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Eating strawberry yogurt will increase your iodine even more.
