Pregnancy Massage Fundamentals
Prenatal massage during pregnancy can be a great way for the mom-to-be to relax. Pregnant women experience many aches and pains during pregnancy that can be eased by prenatal massage. Pregnancy massage can provide health benefits to the mother as long as certain precautions are taken during the massage according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Benefits
-
In addition to providing much needed relaxation, prenatal massage can also aid in reducing swelling, relieving sciatic nerve pain, regulating hormones, relieving stress and improving circulation. Studies have also indicated pregnancy massage can improve labor outcomes when it is performed on a regular basis throughout the pregnancy.
Timing
-
Though there is not a medical reason to do so, many massage therapists will not perform prenatal massages during the first trimester. This is mainly due to the increased risk of miscarriage during the first trimester of pregnancy. A woman's sense of smell is also generally increased in the beginning of pregnancy, which can cause symptoms of morning sickness when she is around strong smells. Ask your massage therapist to use unscented massage oils and refrain from lighting scented candles in the room to avoid this possible unpleasant side effect.

Certification
-
Prenatal massages should only be conducted by a massage therapist who is certified in prenatal massage. Certified professionals have undergone training that is specific to the needs of a pregnant woman. In addition to certain techniques, those certified in prenatal massage will also be aware of areas to avoid during the prenatal massage.
Position
-
Two main positions are used during a prenatal massage. Some massage therapists have tables with a center cut-out for the pregnant belly so the woman can still lay face down on the table. Some women may find this position to be uncomfortable, particularly later in pregnancy. Another position is side lying while being supported by various pillows. Pregnant women should avoid lying flat on their backs after week 16 of pregnancy.
Precautions
-
If pressure points in the ankles and wrists are massaged, it is possible to start contractions of the uterus. These areas should be avoided during a prenatal massage. If at any point during the massage, contractions or cramping of the abdominal region is felt, alert the massage therapist immediately. Communicating with the therapist is essential during a prenatal massage. Pregnant women should consult their physician before having a prenatal massage. Those who have complications or are classified as high-risk may be advised to avoid pregnancy massage.
