Since long before India's Ministry of Tourism and Culture launched the "Incredible India" publicity campaign a decade ago, this exotic destination has held a distinctive place in travelers' imaginations. Still, the ministry's efforts have provend effective in projecting India as one of the world's prime tourist attractions. A boom in recent years within India's tourism industry has stemmed from the take-off of numerous types of tourism across the country.

With its spectacular mountains, primeval jungles and vast deserts, India is the culmination of an outdoor enthusiast's dreams. Adventure tourism has boomed in the last decade. Most adrenaline junkies flock to India's Himalayan states for trekking in Sikkim and Ladakh, skiing in Jammu, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, or diving into the wilds of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
