Zoledronic acid is a prescription drug that is sold under the Reclast and Zometa brand names in the United States. The drug is used by doctors to treat osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women. This medicine is used to treat hypercalcemia in some cancer patients. Zoledronic acid is also prescribed to treat bone marrow cancers and other cancers that have spread to the bones. This medication is administered intravenously and has some side effects.

Zoledronic acid patients have experienced side effects that are related to the nervous system, which require medical help. Some patients have reported seizures, convulsions, coma, shaking in the extremities, lightheadedness and muscle twitching. Depression, irritability and difficulty concentrating can also occur with this drug. Some patients have reported headaches, tiredness and sleep problems.
Respiratory and Related Effects

Some zoledronic acid users notice respiratory side effects such as coughing, shortness of breath or painful breathing. Wheezing and a sore throat are possible effects of this drug.
