Zoledronic acid is a prescription drug that is sold under the Reclast and Zometa brand names in the United States. The drug is used by doctors to treat osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women. This medicine is used to treat hypercalcemia in some cancer patients. Zoledronic acid is also prescribed to treat bone marrow cancers and other cancers that have spread to the bones. This medication is administered intravenously and has some side effects.

  1. Nervous System and Related Effects

    • Zoledronic acid patients have experienced side effects that are related to the nervous system, which require medical help. Some patients have reported seizures, convulsions, coma, shaking in the extremities, lightheadedness and muscle twitching. Depression, irritability and difficulty concentrating can also occur with this drug. Some patients have reported headaches, tiredness and sleep problems.

    Respiratory and Related Effects

    • Some zoledronic acid users notice respiratory side effects such as coughing, shortness of breath or painful breathing. Wheezing and a sore throat are possible effects of this drug. Patients who exercise may experience difficulty breathing. Rapid breathing, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the mouth, nasal congestion or a runny nose are other possible side effects.

    Gastrointestinal and Urinary Effects

    • Zoledronic acid patients have reported side effects of the gastrointestinal or urinary system. According to the Mayo Clinic, some people have noticed tarry or black stools. Vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain are possible while on this drug. Sour stomach, indigestion or heartburn may also occur with zoledronic acid. Some users experience difficulty urinating or painful urination. Urine may have a cloudy or bloody appearance.

    Skin and Related Effects

    • People have experienced skin side effects while using zoledronic acid that require medical assistance. According to the Mayo Clinic, patients have reported sore red nails, skin cracks near the mouth and skin rash throughout the body. White spots, ulcers or sores can occur on the lips. People have reported sunken eyes and jaw swelling. Swelling can occur on the face, on the extremities or on the genitals. Some users have noticed scaly skin or unusual wrinkles.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other side effects have also occurred among zoledronic acid users and they require professional medical advice. According to the Mayo Clinic, patients may experience blurred vision, chest pain or fever while on this medicine. Irregular heartbeat, loss of strength and weight changes can occur. Some people notice pounding in their ears, neck pain and unusual sweating. Back pain, bone pain and ear congestion have also been reported by zoledronic acid patients.
