Pregnant & Job Hunting
Job hunting can be a stressful experience. The applicant shows up to an often unfamiliar place unsure what awaits her as she walks through the door and faces an interviewer. Being pregnant and job hunting at the same time can be even more stressful. Make this process less frustrating with a few simple and easy-to-follow tips. Remember, under federal law, an employer cannot refuse to hire someone because she is pregnant.
-
Disguise
-
Disguise your pregnancy if necessary. Many women do not begin to look pregnant until they are 5 or 6 months pregnant. Wear loose fitting clothing that does not call attention to your waist. This can be accomplished with a simple dress in a dark color. Add a blazer and a piece of understated jewelry to draw the interviewer's attention away from your belly. Wear high heels if possible to make you look taller.
Tell Early
-
Disclose early. If you have a job offer in hand, disclose your condition to the company making the offer. Early disclosure can help avoid problems later on. Telling company officials about your pregnancy can make you look honest and forthcoming. Waiting until a time closer to your due date may have serious repercussions on your job status when you return to work after the baby is born.

Stress Qualifications
-
Play to your strengths. Even if you are visibly pregnant, you may still stand a good chance of a job offer if the company feels you are a worthwhile potential employee. Design a resume that highlights any specific skills and certifications you may possess such as a bachelor's degree in accounting or certification in pediatric nursing.
Research
-
Prepare for the interview thoroughly. The best way to get hired when pregnant is the best way to get hired when not pregnant--do your homework. Research the company before the interview. Find out all you can about the company in question. Learn about its history, products, executive officers and financial goals. Think of questions to ask during the interview to illustrate that you understand the company and will fit into the corporate culture immediately.
Consider Other Alternatives
-
Apply for alternative jobs. A job need not be a 9-to-5 affair in an office with weekends off. Look for work-at-home opportunities such as selling on eBay or freelance writing. Consider creating your own business. Starting a daycare in your home may be an ideal way to combine your financial needs with your desire to be with your infant.
