What Is Job Corps?

If traditional high school programs are not a good fit, or a student needs help with basic college courses, then consider Job Corps. This unique government program provides a combination of education and training that helps participants succeed in life.

What Is Job Corps?

Job Corps is a free service education and vocational training program for youth, ages 16 to 24, funded by Congress and administered through the U.S. Department of Labor. Applicants must have limited financial resources and be willing to adhere to Job Corps rules. Since 1964, Job Corps has assisted youth with various resources in a safe, drug-free environment. There are counselors at Job Corps who provide assistance for both students and parents regarding the program. In addition, students can earn allowances and privileges for doing well in the Job Corps program.

How It Works

While Job Corps is a government program, each Job Corps center is a unique learning campus. At all campuses there are four standard Job Corps phases: Outreach and Admissions, Career Preparation Period, Career Development Period and Career Transition Period.

Options

With over 100 career areas, Job Corps provides diverse training options. A few career areas include construction, finance and business services, health care, information technology, renewable resources and machine repair. In addition to practical training, Job Corps also provides high school education and college courses.

Information for Parents and Participants

Job Corps provides students with the ability to earn various allowances and privileges, such as transportation for students to visit home during winter and summer breaks. Graduates from Job Corps receive assistance with career placement, housing, transportation and even childcare if needed. All of the skills and services are provided to help participants become independent, responsible citizens.

Locations

Job Corps centers are located in 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with approximately 123 centers offering hands-on training in over 100 occupations. Another benefit is that the Job Corps programs also include on-the-job training at work sites for real hands-on learning and experience.

Real Life

Job Corps students receive not only educational and vocational experience but also instruction in independent living and social skills. These additional skills help each candidate succeed in the workplace long after she leaves the Job Corps center.
