Tea Party Ideas for Little Girls

So your little girl wants a tea party. It might sound like an overwhelming project, but with creativity and careful planning, you can throw a festive tea party that even the pickiest of girls will enjoy. For a party of this nature, the emphasis should be on the overall experience. The atmosphere---the way a room looks and what the girls wear---will be more important to them than party games or trying to complete complicated activities. Choosing a theme first will guide the rest of your plans.

  1. Princess Tea Party

    • Does your little girl love to dress up in sparkles and sequins? If so, a princess tea party might be perfect for her. Decorate the room in feminine colors and accent the table with fake jewels or glitter. Arrange an area where guests can dress up. Stock the room with feathery boas, scarves, costume jewelry, plastic tiaras and fancy gowns; a second-hand shop probably will have everything you need.

Allow the girls plenty of time to get dressed and admire themselves and be sure to take pictures when they're finished. Black and white photos of each child in princess attire make a lovely post-party keepsake to include with thank-you notes. For food, provide small, crust-less sandwiches and tiny iced cookies on paper doilies. With very little girls, paper products are more practical than actual china. As most young children don't enjoy hot tea, substitute lemonade or apple juice for beverages.

    Teddy Bear Tea Party

    • A teddy bear theme is perfect for little girls who may be nervous about attending a tea party for the first time. What's more comforting than a teddy bear? First, decorate the room in warm colors with teddy bear accents. Look for small paper plates, cups, and a tablecloth decorated with bears, and add as many stuffed bears as you can around the room.

Purchase a small bear for each guest. You can find simple adornments--ribbons, fake beads or pearls, flowers and basic doll clothes--at most dollar stores. The girls will love dressing up their bears; just make sure that you have extra adults on hand to help them. For food, try making bear-shaped sugar cookies to go along with tiny sandwiches. As the party winds down, read the girls a bear-themed story before they head home.

    Barbie Doll Tea Party

    • The Theme Party Palace website suggests a Barbie tea party, where the guests will dress their dolls instead of themselves. This kind of party works well for girls who think they're "too old" for dress up. Be sure to tell parents ahead of time about the party's theme, so they can bring their child's favorite Barbie Doll with them. You may also want to have a few extra on hand, just in case.

As party favors, give away Barbie clothes and accessories, and allow the girls time to dress their dolls while they're still at the party. Younger girls will probably need help with this, so make sure you have enough adults present to assist them. For food, pair sugar cookies shaped like shoes and purses with tiny, crust-less sandwiches.

    Fairy Tea Party

    • Create a fairy party for little girls with big imaginations. Party pro Anne Jousou suggests hanging fairy wings for decorations and sprinkling flower petals and glitter on the table. When the children first arrive, take them to the decorating station where an adult can use face paint to give each girl a pretty design on her cheek or hand. You can keep the drawings simple to save time; try stenciling a basic butterfly, dragonfly or star onto each child. You may also want to offer them body glitter for their arms and cheeks. For a fairy headpiece, tie sparkly ribbons onto headbands, and for favors, give the girls fairy wings or magic wands. To feed the hungry fairies, serve cupcakes with lots of sprinkles, to enjoy after tiny sandwiches.

    Snowflake Tea Party

    • A winter-themed tea party is especially fun in the summertime. To decorate, use plenty of paper snowflakes. Hang them from the doorways and on the windows. Tea party expert Jenni Wells suggests using a dark-colored tablecloth covered with white doilies to create a winter wonderland effect.

Provide soft scarves and fun winter hats for the girls to wear. For an activity, provide the girls with "snowy" art supplies such as cotton balls, glue, white glitter and pale blue construction paper to create their own winter scenes. Serve tiny sandwiches followed by sugar cookies with white icing or white chocolate chip cookies, and hot cocoa with marshmallows or dollops of whipped cream.
