About Fruit & Protien Diets

The diet industry is constantly striving to invent new and interesting fads in nutrition. While some of these fads (like the more restrictive detox diets) can be downright dangerous, some are fairly safe and healthy methods for dropping a few pounds. Fruit and protein diets fall squarely into the latter category. While eating nothing more than fruit and protein is hardly an optimal diet, is is a safer alternative than many other "get-fit-quick" schemes.

  1. About Fruit and Protein Diets

    • Possibly the diet most characteristic of the whole "fruit and protein" genre is the Fruit Flush Diet, invented by clinical nutritionist Jay Robb. The idea behind these diets is to temporarily remove and replace unhealthy dietary choices with more natural alternatives. In so doing, you will lose weight fairly quickly while reprogramming your taste buds to enjoy healthier foods.

Following a Fruit and Protein Diet

    • A three-day model is the most basic form of a fruit and protein diet. On the first day, consume nothing but protein shakes. On the second and third days, consume fresh fruit every two hours until dinner. Dinner on the last two days should consist of raw vegetables and a small serving of protein (or another protein shake). Following cessation of the plan, you may resume your "normal" eating habits.

    Benefits

    • Dieters have lost up to 10 lb. during the three-day flush. However, be sure to note that a sizable portion of that weight was water weight, and not fat. How sizable is a matter open to debate, but even the Fruit Flush's creator admits that at least half of the lost weight will come from the body shedding water.

    Drawbacks

    • By their very nature, fruit and protein diets will be extremely low-calorie ways of eating. This can be problematic, as weight loss that is gradual and steady is usually best to avoid regaining lost pounds at the end of a diet. At the very least, be prepared to quickly regain the lost water weight. Beyond that, fruit and protein diets contain negligible amounts of dietary fat, which your body needs for certain processes (such as maintaining hormonal balance). While this is likely not going to pose a problem on a short-term fruit and protein diet, you will want to think twice before adopting this kind of plan as a long-term solution.

    Considerations

    • A fruit and protein diet can be a good way to begin your dieting efforts. The rapid weight loss can do much to bolster your confidence and steel your will against the dieting challenges to come. While fruit and protein diets do have their drawbacks, they present much healthier models for eating than many other conventional "fad" diets.
