The Master Cleanse diet, or the lemonade diet, as it is often referred to, was created by Stanley Burroughs. This diet is supposed to alleviate all manners of illness, allergies, as well as remove toxins from the body. It is essential that followers follow all the guidelines of the Master Cleanse in order to reap the best benefits of the program.

      • This diet, according to Stanley Burroughs, author of "The Master Cleanser with Special Needs and Problems," should be followed for at least 10 days. However, it states that it is safe to follow for a maximum of 40 days. The lemonade diet should be used 3 to 4 times a year, as well as whenever the body feels sluggish, or when other health problems present themselves.

      Recipe

      • To make the lemonade, the dieter will need fresh lemon or lime juice, preferably organic, cayenne pepper, distilled or purified water and real maple syrup. It is important not to use synthetic maple syrup or maple flavored sugar.

        Mix 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon or lime juice with 2 tablespoons of real maple syrup and 1/10 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Add to a 10 ounce glass of lukewarm water. Freshly grated lemon peel may also be added to the drink, which produces an even greater laxative effect.

        Six to 12 glasses of the lemonade mixture should be consumed daily. If the dieter needs to lose weight, the amount of the real maple syrup can be reduced to 1 tablespoon, and for those needing to gain weight, the real maple syrup can be increased to 3 tablespoons.

      Vitamins

      • The person undergoing the Master Cleanse should not eat any other food, or take any vitamin supplements, according to Stanley Burroughs. The maple sugar, lemonade and cayenne will provide all the necessary daily nutrients needed for those doing the cleanse.

        It is important to note that before beginning any cleanse, or diet plan you should consult a physician.
