Different Type of Skin Rashes

Skin rashes are one of the most irritating and embarrassing ailments. They can be painful, uncomfortable and in some cases dangerous. They can also be very mysterious, with the causes sometimes baffling doctors. But the good news is that new treatments are available that can reduce the symptoms associated with the most common skin conditions and in some cases cure them entirely.

  1. Shingles

    • Shingles are caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox

One of the most serious skin conditions adults can face is a viral infection called herpes zoster, or more commonly referred to as shingles. This is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chicken pox. Symptoms typically begin as small dots that over time begin to blister, causing pain, tingling or a burning sensation. While there is no "cure" for shingles, topical antibiotics and over-the-counter pain medications can offer relief from the symptoms.

    Hives

    • Hives are typically triggered by an outside stimulus, such as contact with an allergen such as food, plants or medications. Extreme heat or cold can also cause hives, along with certain illnesses such as strep throat. The trigger causes histamines to be released into the skin walls through the bloodstream, causing swollen, red patches and welts to appear. Hives can also occasionally cause breathing difficulties. Antihistamines can lessen side effects of hives, while removing the trigger usually solves the problem permanently.

    Psoriasis

    • Psoriasis is a condition where large red rashes topped by silvery scales called "plaques" form. Common locations include the scalp, elbows, legs, feet, back or genitals. Although it is a non-contagious infection, people with psoriasis tend to go through periods of recovery and relapse throughout their lives. The exact cause of psoriasis is not known, but it is related to the overdevelopment of skin tissues. Treatments include steroid creams, moisturizers and in some cases UV light therapy.

    Eczema

    • Eczema is a term commonly applied to a series of non-contagious conditions that cause red, dry and itchy skin. This rash can be localized, or spread throughout the entire body. The cause of eczema is not known, although research showing a tendency to run in families suggests that it may be genetic. Certain external factors have been shown to exacerbate the condition, including skin irritants, allergens, low or high humidity and stress. Common treatments of eczema include cortisone creams, shots and pills and antibiotics.

    Ringworm

    • Ringworm (or tinea) is one of the most frequent skin conditions faced by adults, particularly by active men. It is a fungal problem that thrives in areas of the body that are damp and warm, such as between the toes or on the groin; because of this, the most frequent occurrences are called "athlete's foot" and "jock itch." In both cases, you might have red, itchy patches that turn into open sores. They can sometimes form into "rings" with red edges, hence the name "ringworm." Most cases of tinea can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams and sprays, although prescription-strength versions may be needed in extreme cases.
