The Geisinger Health System is a physician-led health care system founded in 1915. GHS provides health care, education, research and various services to patients throughout its coverage area in Pennsylvania. One of the biggest features of GHS is the Geisinger Health Plan. This plan is typically offered as group health coverage to employers and comes with many options that are available for plan participants.

The Geisinger Health Plan is a health maintenance organization (HMO). As a result, the plan requires participants to go to specific providers such as doctors and hospitals that specifically contract with the plan. When a patient receives services from a plan provider, they will not need to submit any claims forms or pay any bills. Patients will only be required to pay a deductible.
Costs

Plan members must pay out-of-pocket costs that consist of a deductible and co-payment for care covered by Standard Option and High Option plans. A standard option plan will have a deductible of $500 per calendar year and a high option plan will have a $750 deductible per calendar year. Each type of option plan will have co-payments that consist of $20 for each doctor's visit and a $35 for each specialists visit. The co-payment for an emergency room visit is $100.

The Geisinger Health Plan comes with many benefits. One benefit is for medical services that include diagnostic and treatment services. Medical services also include lab work and other types of diagnostic tests. Plan members will can also receive preventative care for adults and children. Maternity care is also provided on Standard Option and High Option plans.
Prescription Drugs

Prescription drug benefits are offered by the Geisinger Health Plan that are based on a three-tier structure. Tier 1 includes drugs that are generic and do not usually require authorization to be covered by the plan. Tier 2 includes drugs that are brand names that do not have a generic equivalent. Tier 3 includes drugs that do have a generic equivalent available but require prior authorization for certain types of drugs.

Special features are available for members of the Geisinger Health Plan. One feature is a 24-hour nurse help line that can be used for any health concerns. Another feature is an access line for the deaf and hearing impaired. There is also a travel benefit for services that are needed overseas.
