The Application Process
-
Based upon your credentials, you may be offered a position as an online facilitator or campus faculty member anywhere in the United States. Since U of P is distance learning institution, most applicants will seek to teach online. You can apply through its website and have a hard copy of your academic records sent directly to U of P from your university. After initial screening and a rigorous training period, you will have to pass a criminal background check to be offered a position.
Initial Training
-
Initial training is primarily done it two stages. The first stage is a one-day seminar in which applicants study the university's policy manuals online and then complete some assignments. Additionally, you will have to interact with an orientation mentor who poses several discussion questions to which you must respond in a timely manner. U of P frowns upon tardy or incomplete responses and dismissal from candidacy can be immediate.

Specialized Training
-
After orientation, you will be in a discussion group with a moderator for at least a week. Topics about the online teaching environment and how to successfully meet student needs in an asynchronous classroom will be the main focus of discussion. An applicant has to post several substantial notes per day along with completing other writing assignments as the moderator demands. It is intensive and indicative of a real online classroom and the moderator has total control of your posts and can decide whether they are acceptable or not. All training is unpaid.
Mentoring
-
If you successfully complete all training and then pass the criminal background check, you will be offered a class in your subject area with a mentor. Class materials are preordained and little variation is allowed. The mentor will ensure that you follow the planned curriculum and adhere to all university policies.
Compensation
-
Classes are typically taught in 12-week blocks and instructors are paid in full after the course is completed. Pay does not vary much regardless of experience or academic credentials and averages slightly more than $1,200 dollars per course taught. If you pass the course and show that you can handle the workload, the school may offer additional courses to teach. Benefits are limited and only a select group of administrators achieve tenure.
