What Does it Cost to E-File a Federal Tax Return?
You will find many websites that offer free file or a fee for e-filing, and some allow you to deduct the cost of e-filing from your refund amount if you have one coming from the IRS. Your personal status and whether you have business taxes or personal taxes will determine how much or whether you must pay.

Free File
-
If you meet the requirements of a tax website that you are using, you could e-file your taxes at no cost. Some websites have age requirements, adjusted gross income requirements and requirements for each state. Some have requirements about what type of return you file and what credits you qualify for on your federal tax return. Even if your federal return is free, most will require a small fee for state tax returns.
Individual Fixed Fee
-
Most websites that allow you to e-file have a fee base that applies to those who don't meet the requirements for filing for free. The fees range from $7.95 to $14.95 and can change from year to year. Some websites offer cheaper filing fees before a certain date during the filing season and raise the rates after that date.

Additional Fees
-
If you want to upgrade from the basic software to deluxe or premier software, the cost goes up. You could pay anywhere from $50 to $75 to e-file your taxes. Some websites have different costs for each of the federal tax returns as well.
Deduction from Refund Fee
-
TurboTax allows you the option to have your e-filing fee deducted from your refund amount if you have a refunding coming back. The fee for this option can be $20 or more. This option works well for those who don't have a credit or debit card to pay the filing fee.
Business Fixed Fee
-
Business fees can be as much as $109.95. A business must use the business software, which is more because of all the different deductions and expenditures. Self-employed persons such as a freelance writer or artist can use the business or individual software depending on deductions and expenditures.
Warning
-
Before choosing a website to e-file your federal tax return, you should check the IRS website to find a website with free file if you qualify or a website that has a low cost fee.
