What Is Jock Itch?

Jock itch is also known as tinea cruris. It is a fungal infection that most commonly happens to people who sweat a lot, which is the reason for its name. While it may be very uncomfortable, the condition is not serious and can be treated.

  1. Symptoms

    • Jock itch usually occurs around the groin, including the genitals, buttocks and anal area. Signs that you may have the condition include redness, itching and burning. Certain types of exercises, including walking, can aggravate the symptoms.

    Causes

    • According to Mayo Clinic experts, jock itch is caused by fungi that live naturally on the body called dermatophytes. They do not grow into an infection as long as the skin stays dry and clean. On parts of the body that have tendencies to get moist, like the groin, chances of a fungal infection increase.

Jock itch is contagious. It can be spread by using contaminated towels or clothing. It can also be spread through sexual intercourse. This infection also causes athlete's foot and ringworm of the scalp.

    Risk Factors

    • Jock itch is more common in men than women because they wear tighter workout wear, such as athletic supporters that are not washed after each use. People who sweat a lot or are obese are also more prone to jock itch.

People with certain skin diseases, diabetes or HIV/AIDS may also be more susceptible to the condition.

    Treatment

    • An over-the-counter topical anti-fungal medicine will usually help. Experts also recommend cold compresses to help alleviate the itching. Symptoms should begin to disappear within a week, but doctors recommend continued use of medications for about two weeks to be sure the fungal infection has cleared.

    Prevention

    • To help prevent jock itch, bathe daily. Also, keep the groin area as dry as possible. Do not wear thick clothing in warm weather. Don't share personal items such as towels.
