Graphic Design Jobs

Graphic designers are the bridge between companies and their target audience. Graphic designers find the best way via print, web or other media to get a company's message across. Hours

Most graphic designers who work for corporations like newspapers, magazines or design firms work a regular work schedule, which is 40 hours per week. However, designers who freelance or own their own businesses may work schedules according to their clients' needs. Thus, they may work weekends and evenings to meet production deadlines or meet with new clients.

Employment

Publishers, design firms and advertisers typically hire graphic designers. However, engineering, management and consulting firms also employ designers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the need for graphic designers will increase with the demand of interactive media, such as video games, advanced cellular phones and other technology.

Education

Graphic designers should have a bachelor's degree to enter the field. Nevertheless, there are some entry-level graphic design jobs that require only an associate degree. If your bachelor's degree is in a different field, you can obtain a certificate in graphic design from a two-year or three-year program. The certificate programs provide training in the technical aspects of the job.

Functions

Graphic designers meet with their clients or creative directors to determine what the project entails. At times, graphic designers research the project's target audience. They have to know what will appeal to the audience so they can bridge the gap between the company and audience.

Considerations

Although layouts can be done by hand, graphic designers mostly work on computers. Graphic designers must stay up to date with software packages that add animation, graphics and other design elements to their projects. In addition to computer skills, graphic designers must have good communication skills. Designers must be creative, have an eye for detail, and be able to understand and keep up with audience trends.
