What Is the Driver's Education Test?
Anyone who wants to get a U.S. driver's license must pass the driver's education test at a Department of Motor Vehicles office in their state. The driver's education test is based on the state's official driving manual and consists of two parts-a written test and a skills test. Student drivers must achieve passing scores on both tests in order to receive their official drivers license.

Function
-
The driver's education test is designed to test the knowledge and skills of the student driver so that they can earn their drivers license. Driver's education testing facilities can be found in almost every city in the U.S., and most high school students can take a course called Driver's Education during their junior or senior year of high school in order to prepare for this test.
Components
-
The written portion of the exam tests the driver's knowledge about road signs, general driving rules and regulations in the driver's state and is comprised of multiple-choice questions. The road test consists of a set of exercises that test the driver's overall driving skills, navigation abilities and, in some cases, the ability to parallel park.

Test Subjects
-
The exam tests the driver in the following areas: traffic laws, maneuvering a vehicle in low-risk to high-risk environments, navigating through multiple-lane expressways, driving during adverse conditions, general vehicle functions, making wise choices as a driver, drinking and driving, and consequences of breaking driving laws in the driver's respective state.
Preparation
-
Students can prepare for the driver's education test by taking a driver's education class in high school, attending a driving course at a community college, or by visiting their local DMV's website and working through tutorials and lessons online. Students who have completed a formal course will receive a learner's permit which allows them to get behind the wheel of a vehicle with a driving instructor or someone else who holds a valid driver's license so that they can practice their navigation skills and become comfortable maneuvering a vehicle.
Considerations
-
Student must pass both the written examination and the road test in order to get their driver's license. If a student fails either or both parts of the driver's education test, they can retake the test up to three times before having to reapply for a learner's permit. Students that fail the road test must wait 14 days before they can retake this portion of the test. Some states allow students to take their driving skills written test as part of their driver's education program. In this situation, a passing grade allows them to waive the requirement of completing a written test at the local driver's testing facility.
