A computer support technician's jobs responsibilities vary but most often require direct involvement with an organization's work force. The technician will ensure equipment and networks are up and running smoothly and that the quota of replacement equipment set by management is available at all times. Other responsibilities include installing or reinstalling hardware and software on laptops or personal workstations, diagnosing any computer issues users are having, ordering replacement equipment and recovering data after a power outage. A computer support technician is usually on call via telephone, call center or instant messaging. If an issue cannot be resolved remotely, the technician will come to the user's workstation or contact a superior.

Most successful computer support technicians got their start in entry-level support roles.
