Careers for a Business Major

Business majors have a great deal of flexibility when they enter the job market. Business degrees provide a background of information about the commercial world rather than a narrow, more focused major like accounting or finance. You will spend a lot of time working with numbers and determining their significance and how you can use them to improve a company. For many jobs, a graduate degree, such as an master's in business administration, is very helpful for advancing in the company.

  1. Human Resources

    • People who work in human resources help manage the people who work for a company. They help decide who gets hired for open positions and how training should be set up to maximize the workers' productivity. They are also be responsible for evaluating employees and help determine who is cut if the company has to make layoffs.

    Purchasing Agents

    • Purchasers determine where the company will get supplies and raw materials. They are in close contact with suppliers to determine which supplier can best fit the company's needs. Purchasers consider not only which supplier can offer the lowest price but also which suppliers will be the most reliable and offer the best quality. They travel to trade shows as needed.

    Insurance Agent

    • An insurance agent works with clients to help determine their needs and which coverage is right for them. Insurance agents can offer a wide range of products, including health insurance, homeowners' and renters' insurance, life insurance and auto insurance. He must able to promote himself and his company to attract business. Depending on the territory's size, the agent may have to travel to meet with clients.

    Managers

    • Mangers oversee the work of the people that they supervise. Some managers work in retail, setting up schedules for the employees, determining which products will be put on sale and managing inventory. Business managers usually work on a broad scale, researching and implementing company policies and planning expansions.

    Real Estate

    • Real-estate agents' primary responsibility is to connect buyers and sellers. She may work on behalf of someone looking to sell his home, buy a home or both. She can also find a job working for a bank that issues mortgages to home buyers.
