Problems With Traveling by Train

This article provides an overview of the major problems that could result from traveling by train. It also offers alternatives to train travel and possible solutions for fixing problems related to train travel.

  1. Introduction

    • Train travel can be risky because of the possible problems involved. It's generally a convenient way to get around a new or familiar place, but trains can break down and take more time to reach a destination than other forms of travel. It can also be difficult to get train tickets and find transportation to and from train stations.

    Breakdowns

    • Problem: Sometimes, a train will stall or break down with no explanation from the conductor and no hints of how long it will take to remedy the issue.

Solution:There usually isn't much you can do to improve this situation. Patience is the most helpful trait to have in a breakdown. Usually, train drivers and track operators are able to get a train going again within an hour, and most train cars are equipped with intercoms that you can use to communicate with an operator about the problem. In some extreme cases, it might be quicker to walk than to wait out an extended delay.

    Time

    • Problem: Trains take longer to reach a destination than some speedier forms of transportation, such as planes or high-speed rail.

Solution: If you need to arrive at your destination by a specific time, make sure to buy a ticket that allows you at least an hour or two of leeway. Another alternative is to choose a faster method of transportation.

    Tickets

    • Problem: It's sometimes tricky to get a train ticket during a particularly busy time of day, even if you buy in advance.

Solution: Always plan to purchase your ticket as early as possible--even weeks or months before your trip, as long as you're sure of the exact travel dates. If you can, try buying a ticket online or over the phone rather than in person, as long lines and waits at train stations could cause you to miss your train or arrive late.

    Transportation

    • Problem: Going to the train station usually requires using another mode of transportation unless you live close enough to walk, and dragging luggage through multiple modes of transportation can be a hassle.

Solution: Plan ahead. Call a taxi that will arrive at a specific time and take you right to the train station, which can save time and money. You could also arrange to get a ride from a friend or take another mode of public transportation, such as a bus or light rail, to get to and from the train station.
