According to the World Health Organization, there are 300 million obese people in the world and 1 billion people are overweight. This startling statistic is due to the fact that most of these individuals are consuming foods with no nutritional value. Foods with no nutritional value contain calories and unhealthy ingredients, such as sugar, but little to no healthful nutrients. If you are trying to eat healthy or lose weight, it's best to avoid foods like sugary beverages, candies and alcohol.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, soda is one drink that has absolutely zero nutritional value. For example, a 20-ounce bottle of cola contains 240 calories, 65 grams of sugar, and zero vitamins. An 8-ounce can of a non-cola soft drink has 96 calories, 26 grams of sugar, and also contains zero vitamins. Soda is the equivalent of drinking water with sugar.
Hard candy such as lollipops, mints, sugar wafers, rock candy, cough drops, and jaw breakers also contain zero nutritional value. For example, 3 pieces of hard candy contain 70 calories and 11 grams of sugar with zero vitamins or minerals. An average lollipop contains 60 calories, 11 grams of sugar, and no nutrients.
Most alcoholic drinks contain very little nutritional value. For example, one 12-ounce can of beer has 145 calories, 10.6 grams of carbohydrates and zero vitamins or minerals as well.
Gummies such as gummy worms, gummy frogs, gum drops and jelly beans also have zero nutritional value and are high in calories. For example, 35 pieces of jelly beans contains 140 calories, 28 grams of sugar, and no vitamins or minerals. Gummy worms have 160 calories, 22 grams of sugar, 2 grams of protein, and zero vitamins or minerals.
Fruit drinks almost have as little nutritional value as soda does. For example an 8-ounce fruit drink has 120 calories, 28 grams of sugar, and no vitamins or minerals.
