Dyson Vacuums Vs. Hoover

Save

Hoover and Dyson are two popular names in vacuums. Both brands have a loyal following and both have many models to choose from. For the purpose of this review, we will look at the Hoover WindTunnel vacuums and the Dyson upright vacuums.

It is clear that not all vacuums are alike. From their technologies to the price, the differences are profound.

Hoover WindTunnel Technology

  • Hoover released their innovative WindTunnel technology in 1997. Conventional vacuums have a common problem of dirt being scattered on the floor instead of ending up in the vacuum. This is likely due to the fact that brush roll and airflow do not continually work in harmony. The WindTunnel technology traps the dirt so that it cannot be scattered back into the carpet.

Dyson Cyclone Technology

  • Dyson vacuums also have an innovative suction technique, but Dyson engineers concentrated on the power of the suction. Dyson vacuums spin the air at high speeds, flinging it to the bottom of the chamber. This eliminates the need for bags or filters that other vacuums use to trap the air. In those models, the filters and bags get clogged by the dirt thereby diminishing the suction strength. The design of a Dyson makes it so that no matter how much dirt is picked up, the suction is not affected.

Maneuverability

  • The Hoover WindTunnel vacuum, like most conventional upright vacuums, sits on four wheels. These wheels turn easily enough, but cannot turn around corners smoothly. The WindTunnel vacuum does come with a self-propelled feature making pushing in a forward and backward motion effortless.

Dyson vacuums move using "The Ball" roller technology, which lets the vacuum turn effortlessly around obstacles, including corners, as it spins around its traction ball. This design is particularly functional because the ball holds the motor and, with the motor so low, the vacuum's center of gravity is low, which aids its ease of movement.

Warranty

  • Hoover vacuums, including the Hoover WindTunnel vacuums come with a one year full warranty. Dyson vacuums however come with a five year warranty on parts and labor.

Price

  • Hoover upright WindTunnel vacuums range in price from $135 to $299, depending on the features, including self-propelled, bagless operation, tools and more. The Dyson upright vacuums range from $399.99 to $599.99.
