Many patients with heart problems take this drug. It can be taken to treat and prevent heart attacks as well as to ease chest pains. Nitrostat can cause certain side effects that can be mild or quite severe.

Allergic Reaction

Those who take Nitrostat may experience a severe allergic reaction. According to drugs.com, symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the mouth, lips, face and tongue, difficulty breathing, fainting, dry mouth, blurred vision, heavy sweating, flushing, worsening chest pain, nausea, and severe dizziness. Patients may also feel weak, have shortness of breath, experience slowing of heartbeat, and have swollen hands, feet or ankles. If you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention.
Side Effects - Nervous System

Drugs.com explains that mild to severe nervous system side effects have been reported by those taking Nitrostat. Between 2 and 50 percent of patients report that they have experienced headaches and lightheadedness that were severe. These lessened after two weeks of therapy, according to drugs.com. Swelling of the optic disc (papilledema), double vision and decreased mental status have been reported and may be caused by pressure within the cranium. Ageusia, or a loss of taste function, has also been reported, but it is rare.

Multiple cardiovascular side effects are possible for those who are taking Nitrostat. Drugs.com explains that these include slow heart rate (bradycardia), hypotension, and hypotension that occurs because of intravenous nitroglycerin. Other severe side effects are complete blockage of the heart, severe chest pain, widening of blood vessels in the lungs, and tolerance to cardiovascular effects (see Resources).
Side Effects - Gastrointestinal/Dermatologic

Gastrointestinal side effects are rare, according to drugs.com. Less than 1 percent of patients have reported an upset stomach while taking Nitrostat. Other severe symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea are associated with a severe allergic reaction to the medicine. Dermatologic side effects can include rash, itching and burning of the skin, a common skin disease known as lichen planus and skin sensitivity. These side effects usually occur when Nitrostat is given through patches placed on the skin.

According to drugs.com, patients taking Nitrostat should avoid alcohol. This can enhance certain side effects. Since this drug can cause drowsiness and dizziness, avoid driving if these symptoms occur. Certain medications can also enhance side effects. These include blood pressure medications, antidepressants, erectile dysfunction and stomach disorder medications.
