History of the Nissan Logo

Nissan Motor Company has been around quite a long time. There have been name changes, losses and expansion leading to the Nissan consumers are used to today. If you have been around the car game long enough, you probably have noticed that Nissan has plenty of logos and plenty of history to go along with them.

  1. The Beginnings of Nissan

    • Nissan began as DAT Motorcar company with the name coming from the company partner's names. Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takuchi's family names led to the DAT acronym.

    The Datsun Name Is Born

    • Then in 1918, DAT motorcar company was renamed to Kwaishinsha Motorcar company for seven years. After the seven years, they returned to the name DAT motorcar company. Then, after a merger and a series of years, DAT motors decided to come out with a new car called the Datson, meaning the son of DAT. After this car was made and Nissan took over DAT motors, they changed the "son" to "sun" because son also means loss in Japan; thus, giving birth to the first Datsun.

    Nissan: Created

    • Then, in 1934, after taking over DAT motors, Nissan officially became Nissan under the name Nissan Motor Company Ltd. During this time, the company went through a lot of contracts and other expansions. In the beginning, Nissan was partnered with European companies to help design and make their Datsun models.

    Another Merger: Nissan Benefits

    • Nissan Skyline logo

30 years later, Nissan merged with Prince Motor Company, bringing with it a couple of models, but especially the Skyline, which is now touted as one of Nissan's best cars. The Prince named was kept on the vehicles at first, but through the years it was eventually dropped with Nissan replacing it.

    Nissan's Luxury Brand

    • Then in the 1980s, Nissan decided to start making an luxury brand of vehicles known as Infiniti. Nissan still makes Infiniti cars today.

    Nissan Motor Company

    • After all the name changes, mergers and history, Nissan is now what you see today, the big logo across everyone of its cars and trucks. Nissan is popular around the world. Nissan Motor Company hasn't slowed down much over the years and seems like it is here to stay.
