Drug effectsMuscle relaxers send a signal to the body's central nervous system, which blocks pain caused by muscle injuries. Because muscles heal themselves naturally, Soma is not used to heal muscles, but rather to relieve muscle pain until the muscles heal themselves. Soma is commonly prescribed for back injuries, and is often prescribed in conjunction with physical therapy. Doctors usually prescribe 250 to 350 mg, and the frequency of dosage may depend on the severity of pain. -
Ask your pharmacist for more information.Soma is not categorized as a narcotic; however, it is a type of painkiller, so it's important to know that it shouldn't be taken with alcohol, antidepressants or sleeping pills. Soma may also react with other medications, so it's very important to be open with your doctors, discussing your health conditions and any medications you take regularly. - Because Soma blocks pain receptors, it may cause drowsiness. Other common side effects included dizziness or headaches. Serious side effects such as seizures are rare and usually only occur in drug overdoses. Some doctors feel that Soma may cause a drug dependency because it works so well in pain reduction.

There really are not any studies that analyze the long-term effects of Soma. However, most doctors only prescribe Soma for a period of no more than two to three weeks. Doctors do theorize that longtime use of Soma can cause serious drug dependency. Therefore, if a patient uses this muscle relaxer for a long period of time, withdrawal symptoms may arise when the patient stops taking the medication.
Other doctors claim that Soma is not effective for long-term use because patients tend to feel so good on the medication. Because of this, they tend to overuse injured muscles while medicated, before the muscles have properly healed. This, in turn, can damage an injured muscle to an even greater extent. - Soma is an excellent drug to reduce muscle pain. Even though there is less of a risk for dependency than narcotic pain pills, there is some risk in that area. If you are open and honest with your doctor, this medication should improve your quality of life, and the long-term side effects should be minimal.
