Side Effects of Metronidazol

Metronidazole is a prescription medicine that is used for the treatment of various infections. It is an antibiotic and is classified within the nitroimidazoles. The medication functions by halting the growth of protozoa and bacteria. The medicine is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu and the common cold. As with any medicine, there are some possible negative side effects that could result from taking Metronizadole.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • There are several common side effects that could occur from use of Metronizadole. In general, these side effects are considered to be minor; they usually subside on their own as the body adjusts to the new medicine. However, should the side effects get worse or not go away, medical attention might be necessary. These side effects include constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, upset stomach, throwing up, headache, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, nausea and a metallic taste in the mouth.

    Serious Side Effects

    • In cases of serious side effects, seek emergency medical assistance as soon as possible. These potentially harmful side effects are urinating more or less frequently; bloody stools; tingling, burning or numbness of the legs, feet, hands or arms; sore throat; extreme diarrhea; vaginal discharge; itchiness or odor; white patches inside of the mouth; stomach ache; cramps; fever; and chills.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also considered to be severe side effects of Metronidazole use. In situations of allergic reaction, seek immediate medical assistance. Some signs of allergic reaction to Metronidazole include trouble breathing; chest tightness; swelling of the tongue, lips, face or mouth; breaking out into hives; itchiness; and skin rash.

    Topical Side Effects

    • Metronidazole is also available in topical cream, gel and emulsion forms in addition to tablets and capsules. The aforementioned side effects are for the oral forms of Metronidazole. Common side effects that occur as a result of the topical forms of the medication include mild stinging, burning, itching, dryness and scaling.

    Caution

    • It is vital to be cautious when considering whether to use Metronidazole. Individuals must notify their doctors of their medical history and present medical conditions, especially intestinal or stomach-related disorders (such as Crohn's disease), liver disease, nerve disorders, epilepsy or blood cell conditions (like leukopenia or anemia).
