What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Throat Cancer?

Throat cancer can have a variety of causal factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or even a lack of fruits and vegetables in the diet. Some of the symptoms that are often associated with throat cancer can also be the signs of other, less significant medical problems. It is always important to get checked out by your physician when you feel as though you may be experiencing the symptoms of cancer.

  1. Cough

    • Throat cancer can be signified by a persistent cough that seems to appear for no reason, but yet persistently remains and reappears frequently. This cough may begin to make the voice hoarse, and can cause the throat to become sore. Swallowing may become difficult, and may result in difficulty speaking. It may also cause the patient's voice to change as well. If the condition advances, it could also make breathing difficult. In many cases, this cough is the result of the cancer beginning to form on the vocal chords, and this is why the voice is affected.

    Throat Lumps

    • A person showing the symptoms of throat cancer may begin to display lumps on his throat, and he may also develop sores inside his throat that could begin bleeding. The lumps may also begin to appear inside the mouth, or at the base of the neck. The sores will not appear to heal, and the lumps will not show any signs of reducing or going away.

    Sinus Pain

    • The throat cancer may begin to affect the sinuses, which can result in the patient feeling congested all of the time. Pain may develop in the ears, and the patient may also begin to develop frequent and painful headaches. The sinus congestion will remain constant, and no remedy will appear to relieve the pressure, including the use of antibiotics. This may also cause pain in the upper jaw that will lead to pain around the upper teeth.

    Weight Loss

    • As is the case with other forms of cancer, a patient experiencing the symptoms of throat cancer will start to show signs of rapid weight loss. The weight loss will occur regardless of whether or not the patient is attempting to lose weight through diet and exercise.

    Facial Muscles

    • A potential symptom of throat cancer that does not always appear is paralysis in the facial muscles. Some of the facial muscles may also begin to experience severe pain, and this pain can also radiate down through the neck muscles. This pain becomes chronic, and there can appear to be no relief for it.
