The country of France is in Western Europe and is home to varying climates. The coastal regions of France are temperate and oceanic with parts of the country being Mediterranean. Inland areas of the country are continental with hot summers and in mountainous areas like the Alps, the climate is alpine. These many variations in climate and weather invite a bedazzling environment brimming with lush plant life.

  1. Butterwort

    • A tubeflower from the butterwort family endemic to France

      Butterwort is from the Pinguicula genus of carnivorous plants, many of which are endemic to France. Butterwort is a family of different carnivorous plants that produce bright colored flowers and deep green foliage. Other names for the butterwort include the bog violet and the marsh violet.

    Nemesia

    • A garden blanket of nemesia

      Nemesia can be found throughout many gardens and roadways in metropolitan areas of France. In Mediterranean areas it blooms year-round, but is an annual in the cooler regions of France.

    Dahlia

    • A crimson dahlia blooming in the sun

      Dahlias are popular flowers with bright and vibrant blooms of petals that grow asymmetrically. They grow well in moist parts of the France, and are also grown throughout gardens in the metropolitan areas.

    Clematis

    • A blooming clematis vine

      Clematis is a flowering vine plant that thrives in the sunniest parts of France, and is planted along fences and buildings throughout the country. The clematis can be of the evergreen variety, or a seasonally blooming perennial plant. Clematis flowers are most commonly purple, but also come in white.

    Pineapple Sage

      Pineapple sage is a huge variety of sage that grows to as tall as 6 feet produces huge, deep red flowers. The leaves are edible and the plant is aromatic. It grows all over France, but is more abundant in sunny and warm areas.

    Calla Lily

      The calla lily grows in moist areas in France, and can be found especially near marshlands, and in well-maintained garden reservoirs. They are most often white, but can also be found in variations of yellow and orange.

    Rosemary

    • Flowering rosemary plant

      Rosemary is a green herb that grows wild all over Europe and parts of France, it also grows in the United States. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and is often used in cooking. It has blue or purple flowers.
