Tomtom 920 Vs. 930

GPS devices are becoming more and more popular among avid travelers and the occasional weekend warrior. They help travelers find their way to their destinations and navigate unfamiliar surface streets once they get there. Among the various manufacturers of GPS units, TomTom is one of the most popular. Two of the their top models are the TomTom 930 and the TomTom 920.

  1. Display

    • There are very few differences between the size and display on the TomTop 920 and 930 models. Both models offer a 4.3-inch screen. The screen is a widescreen model that displays 480 pixels in width and 272 pixels in height. The most noticeable difference between the two models is that the newer 930 TomTom is available in a black finish while the older 920 is silver in color.

    Lane Guidance

    • While the TomTom 920 is an excellent device for the price, it doesn't have some of the integrated features that the 930 has. One of the most useful features to the newer model is known as lane guidance. Instead of telling drivers they will need to turn at a certain intersection, the 930 offers drivers a visual guide for where they will need to turn, and how far away it is from their current location; it even shows which lane they will need to be in to execute the turn. This feature is helpful when navigating through congested areas with multiple turn lanes and merging lanes.

    Upgrades

    • Although the TomTom 920 and the Tom Tom 930 are primarily the same device, a few minor changes on the 930 make using the device safer while driving, and they do streamline the controls. Both models show how fast a driver is going at a particular time in comparison to the posted speed limit, but on the 930 the display is located at the bottom of the screen. Another upgrade to the 930 is the intelligent guide that displays how long it will take for a driver to reach their destination. In the older 920 model the estimates are off by a larger margin.

    Trip Guidance

    • While the TomTom 920 allows users to program up to 50 individual waypoints, as well a 48 waypoint-per-route, the 930 offers an additional feature. It lets users store up to 50 preprogrammed routes into the unit to make repetitive trips easy to plan.

    Intelligent Routing

    • The new TomTom 930 offers an intelligent routing feature, as well. This feature gathers anonymous data from users whose input specifically enables that function. The data that is sent to TomTom indicates how long the trip actually takes versus the original TomTom estimate. Using this feature, TomTom devices allow each user of the 930 to assist TomTom in perfecting their trip estimates.
