What is a BUP File Type?
A BUP file type is a backup file created by a variety of applications including word processing, accounting and presentation packages. The BUP file type is generally created automatically in the event of a program crash or if the original file becomes corrupt due to a programming error or virus.

How to Identify the BUP File Type
-
The BUP file type ends in the ".bup" extension. So, if you look in a file directory, BUP files will have the following file name construction-- "XXXXX.bup" with "XXXXX" representing the program or file name given to the original file.
BUP Files & DVD Discs
-
BUP file types are also found on DVD discs. The files are a backup of the IFO files stored on a DVD disc. If your DVD player cannot read the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" data on the disc, the player will try to read the BUP backup file.
Accessing DVD BUP Files on Your Computer
-
You can read DVD BUP files directly by locating them on the DVD disc using DVD player software--InterVideo WinDVD or Cyberlink Power DVD on Windows computers and Apple DVD Studio Pro on Mac computers. Double click on the ".bup" file to view the contents of the BUP file.
Opening Application BUP Files
-
To open a BUP file, open the program that originally created the BUP file, navigate to the directory containing the BUP and double click on the BUP file. Your BUP file should contain information from the last time the program was used or the last time data was saved to the BUP file. So, if your word processing package crashed after entering the last page of a document, your BUP file may not contain the last page of your work. It depends on when data was saved to the BUP file.
Common Windows Operating System Error Related to BUP Files
-
A common Windows error related to BUP files is "Windows can't open .BUP file." Usually this means you may not have the program that originally created the BUP file. The program that created the BUP file may have been removed or is corrupt. Check your system's programs and registry to try and correct the error.
