Novo-Hydrazide Side Effects
Novo-hydrazide, also known as Microzide, is a thiazide diuretic prescribed to manage hypertension and treat edema. It works to lower blood pressure and lessen edema by ridding the body of excess water and salt through the kidneys. Novo-hydrazide may cause several side effects, and patients should notify their doctor if they occur.
-
Dizziness
-
Novo-hydrazide can cause dizziness and lightheadedness, especially when rising from a sitting or prone position. Care should be taken when performing strenuous activities, such as climbing, calisthenics or aerobic exercises.
Gastrointestinal and Elimination Symptoms
-
Several side effects of novo-hydrazide involve the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys. These include indigestion, stomach pain, anorexia, nausea or vomiting, black or bloody stools and painful or bloody urination. These side effects can vary in intensity and duration.
-
Photosensitivity
-
Another side effect of novo-hydrazide is photosensitivity, or increased sensitivity to light. Symptoms of photosensitivity include skin itchiness, inflammation or a rash that resembles a sunburn.
Low Potassium Level
-
The diuretic action of novo-hydrazide can cause a low potassium level, especially when taken at high doses or for an extended period. Symptoms of a low potassium level are muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, weakness, numbness and tingling, rash, nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst and rapid heartbeat. A low potassium level must be treated promptly.
Low Sodium Level
-
The diuretic action of novo-hydrazide also can cause a low sodium level in the body. Symptoms of a low sodium level are irritability, confusion, muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness and convulsions. A low sodium level must be treated promptly.
Allergic Reaction
-
Patients who develop hives, shortness of breath, asthma, cough, fever or facial swelling may be having an allergic reaction to novo-hydrazide. These symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
Rare Side Effects
-
Rare side effects reported with novo-hydrazide use include sexual dysfunction, vision changes, easy bruising and jaundice. These side effects are considered serious and should be reported to a physician immediately.
