Types of Braiding Styles

Braids are an easy, attractive way to keep your hair out of your face. They have been used for centuries in many different cultures. Once you've learned how to do a regular, three strand braid, you can learn how to do other types of braiding styles as well. Use them on your hair to add a little interest. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Simple/American Braid

    • This braid is the basis for all other braids, and is easy to do. With this type of braiding style, you gather all of the hair that you want to braid, and then split it into three sections. You then alternate bringing the left side over the middle, and then the right side over the middle. Continue this pattern until you reach the bottom of the hair and secure with an elastic.

    French Braid

    • The French braid is a braiding style that is slightly more complicated than a simple braid. A true French braid begins at the hairline; however, it can start almost anywhere in the hair for a different look. With a french braid, you gather the hair from the center of the section you want to braid, and begin the right-over-center, left-over-center pattern. However, each time you gather a section to pull it over the center, you take a small section of hair that is not a part of the section and pull it over as well, weaving the hair into the braid.

    Dutch Braid

    • The Dutch braid is a braiding style that allows the braid to lay on top of the hair, instead of being weaved into it. A dutch braid uses the same technique of gathering new sections as a French braid, but instead of a left-over-center, right-over-center pattern, you switch to a left-under-center, right-under-center pattern. The braid should lay on top of the hair.

    Fish Bone Braid

    • The fish bone braiding style is a two-section braid that is easy to do, but looks very impressive. The fish bone braid starts with the hair parted into two sections. One small section is taken from the left top and gathered into the right, and then one small section is taken from the right and gathered into the left. Continue all of the way down the head. Use the smallest sections possible to create an intricate look.

    Biker Braid

    • The biker braid is not a true weaved braid, but is still considered a braiding style. This braid is started with the hair secured into a ponytail with an elastic. More elastics are added down the length of the ponytail, separating it into sections. The sections are then pulled to plump them up, creating a puffy, braided look.
