Bar Countertop Ideas
Decorating a bar countertop is an opportunity to explore your creativity. Whether you decide to design a tile mosaic or make a pattern with wood strips, creating a useful and distinctive countertop for you bar can be a simple do-it-yourself project. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Mosaic
-
Create a mosaic pattern on your bar countertop with 1-inch ceramic or porcelain tiles. Porcelain is the stronger of the two tiles, if that is a concern, but ceramic tiles will hold up well to just about any type of daily use. To create a mosaic pattern, draw your design directly on top of the plywood substrate and add the tiles in sections based on your design. You can use Weldbond adhesive for indoor bar countertops or thinset mortar for outdoor bar countertops. Grout and seal the finished mosaic to protect against moisture and stains.
Wood
-
A sleek and shiny hardwood countertop is a simple design solution for your bar. You can select from a variety of exotic hardwoods and layer coats of polyurethane for a thick, protective surface. You can also create a design with hardwood strips, such as a butcher block or chevron pattern. The ultimate protection for your hardwood bar countertop is a sheet of glass or acrylic to cover the surface and protect your design.

Tile
-
Tiling your bar countertop with large 12-inch square porcelain or ceramic tiles is a quick way to create a decorative surface for the bar top. Your bar is likely more than 12 inches deep, so consider adding a border of 4-inch tiles along the top and the bottom of the 12-inch tiles, giving you an overall depth of slightly more than 20 inches, including the grout lines.
Mirror Tiles
-
Installing mirror tiles on a bar countertop can fit in well with a contemporary, art deco or shabby chic style room. Use mirror mastic to easily place the tiles directly on top of the plywood substrate. Make sure you use adhesive designed for mirrors, as others will bleed through and deface the mirrors over time. You can cut your mirror tiles to fit or to create a pattern with a glass cutter and running pliers. Score the face of the mirror with the glass cutter, and then snap it apart with the pliers.
Collage
-
Make a collage for your bar countertop with photos of your family and friends, vacation destinations, your wedding or anything of importance in your life. Have a sheet of glass cut to fit over the collage to protect the images. Secure the glass with removable adhesive tabs so that you can exchange and update your collage as you like.
