Dog Pregnancy Stages

Understanding the various stages of a dog's development is an important part of being able to raise healthy and happy puppies. It is also beneficial for you to know about dog pregnancy stages so that you can be the best dog owner possible.

  1. Time Frame

    • Dog pregnancy lasts an average of 64 days. Some dogs and types of dogs might have a pregnancy that lasts for 60 days, and some might last as long as 70 days. However, for the most part, 64 days is the typical time frame for a dog's pregnancy.

    Stages

    • The stages of a dog's pregnancy are almost unnoticeable. A dog goes through two months of pregnancy. In the first month, the puppies develop between the female's ribs. During this time, you'll likely see her ribs expand and get larger. During the second month, the dogs will drop to the lower portion of her stomach, and her stomach will expand. You'll be able to see the stomach get larger and might actually be able to witness the pups wiggling as the due date approaches.

    Considerations

    • There are several things to keep in mind as you go through the stages of a dog's pregnancy. First of all, during the first month, you should keep feeding the female her regular food. The only thing that should change is that you should allow her to eat as much as she would like. During the second month, you should switch her to puppy food and still allow her to eat as much as she would like to eat. Also, another thing to remember is that you should not give a pregnant dog any type of medication, even for fleas and ticks, without consulting your vet.

    Misconceptions

    • Usually, dogs do not need any other type of special treatment when they are pregnant. You should allow them to have the same level of movement that they would like to have. Also, you should keep them eating as much as they would like. Dogs do not go through morning sickness, but might experience a slight change in demeanor when they are pregnant.

    Warning

    • As your dog reaches the end of the second month of her pregnancy, you should not leave her alone, because you do not want to be away from her when she goes into labor.
