Pulled Thigh Muscle Symptoms

Save

A pulled muscle means that the muscle has been stretched beyond its normal capacity. Often referred to as a muscle strain, this type of injury is usually a result of an awkward or unusual movement that causes the muscle to contract abruptly. You may also suffer a pulled muscle from poor conditioning or even muscle fatigue.

There are several symptoms that can occur to indicate you've pulled a muscle in your thigh.

Pain

  • A common sign of a pulled thigh muscle is immediate pain. Depending on the severity of the injury, you might feel anything from a subtle soreness to a pronounced, sharp ache or sting within your thigh. Pain typically occurs at the exact moment of the injury, helping to indicate that something is wrong and stopping you from further damaging your muscle.

Swelling

  • Soon after the injury, you may begin to notice swelling along your thigh. This usually takes place just over the pulled muscle, as blood begins to rush into the area to aid healing. As with pain, the amount of swelling is typically dependent on the severity of the injury. For some, the swelling is barely visible to the eye. For others, it is far more pronounced.

Stiffness

  • It is also common to suffer from some level of stiffness after pulling a thigh muscle. This stiffness or inflexibility can set in almost immediately after the injury and often worsens as the day progresses, largely due to an excess of blood that causes the muscle to swell or inflame.

Immobility

  • A pulled thigh muscle can frequently cause you to suffer from immobility of the affected leg. This symptom can range in intensity from a slight difficulty in walking to an inability to place any weight on your leg.

Bruising

  • Although less common, you may also notice some bruising along the area of injury. When you suffer a strain, blood vessels can become damaged, causing them to leak blood. Inevitably, this blood pools and causes a bruise to form. And much like other symptoms of a pull, the amount of bruising is based on the seriousness of the injury.
