What is Tek-tite?

Tektite is a company based in the United States that specializes in the making of LED lights and replacement bulbs. It has branched out to produce rugged products for use outdoors, in industrial settings, for public safety agencies and military markets. Tektite also is the name of the company's initial LED light brand.

  1. Formation

    • Tektite Industries was formed in September 1990, according to the company's website. In its first full year, Tektite produced two unique products. First came the Ocean Edge/Tekna, which was a dive computer with a compass. Then the company produced a more environmentally sound alternative to chemical light sticks. The Mark-Lite was designed to reduce waste caused by chemical sticks and became the first commercially accepted alternative to this type of light.

    LED Flashlights

    • Tektite is perhaps best known for its rugged, super-bright LED flashlights, which hit the market in 1998 under the brand name Trek 2, which was designed to be a dive flashlight. Tektite's LED flashlights are desired because they offer more than 10,000 hours of battery life and are difficult to break. They also resist shock and vibration. Some of Tektite's 19 current flashlight brands are used by the U.S. military and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

    Military and Law Enforcement

    • Tektite's technology is desired by armed forces around the world. Infrared strobes, tactical flashlights, strobe and runway lights and tactical light holders are some of the products Tektite produces for the military. Some of the 19 products are billed under the "Black Ops" moniker and are designed to help the military work efficiently in extremely dark conditions. Tektite also produces forensic lighting for crime scene investigations, including the fluorescent blue lights used to detect bodily fluids.

    Diving Lights

    • Tektite continues to produce lights for scuba divers. In 2009, the company made six different diving lights, some of which can produce up to 600 lumens of brilliant light with a 12-watt LED bulb.

    Disaster Preparation

    • Tektite bills many of its products for disaster preparedness, including its flashlights, portable emergency landing zones and landing strip lights. Tektite markets the latter two products to law enforcement and emergency management agencies, as the products can help create makeshift landing areas for helicopters and planes in night conditions.
