More and more people are deciding to build their own home movie theaters rather than go out to the local multiplex and pay to watch the film with other people, distractions and hassles. As technology continues to advance, the selection of films will only grow, making a good home movie theater the ultimate place to privately watch all of your favorite films or even new releases. And what's more, it's already affordable. Entire home theater systems can be put together for only a few hundred dollars. Movies are cheap to buy and are even less if you sign up for a subscription service like Netflix, which is like having a huge selection from a video store at your disposal. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Evolving Technology

    • DVDs, Blu-Ray, flat-screen LCDs--these have all boomed in the last decade and have literally transformed how we watch. And newer, better models are coming out every year. So the next logical thought is: What if I could watch everything--not just films, but television, sports, home movies--on a movie-theater-quality screening room with surround sound?

    The Room

    • The room in which you build your home theater should be narrow, or not much wider than the screen itself. This will help direct your field of vision to entirely engage you with the screen and not in the lingering darkness, or other details, outside of the frame. The room should have good acoustics, with walls that reflect sound and perhaps carpet on the floor, or rugs, to absorb it.

    Sound System

    • Quality surround sound systems for a home theater can be bought for as little as $300 and do an outstanding job, assuming the acoustics in your home theater are good. A subwoofer and front speakers will be needed for sound from the front and then two to four back speakers can be used to complete the surround sound setup. For very high-end speakers, the Aperion Initimus 4T speaker system is just the ticket. If the home theater has been converted from another room and wires are going to be difficult to run between the front and back speakers, a wireless system can be set up sending the sound signal between the front and back speakers. Check out Rocketfish wireless set-ups for this.

    Seating

    • Quality theater seating can be bought by aficionados, from companies like Berkline and Majestic, which sell standard theater seats and comfy ones with leg rests you can kick back on for anywhere from $300 to $1,200 and up apiece. This is all in the amount you want to spend on your home theater setup. Chairs shouldn't be too comfortable as you're more likely to doze off, rather than watch the movie. It might make more sense just to bring in chairs from the living room.

    Digital Projection

    • A beautiful LCD or plasma flatscreen TV will do everything you would ever want it to do in a home theater setup. Panasonic and Samsung models seem to have the best reviews from critics, though LG makes a few good models like the LH90 series. But a roll down or permanent screen and digital projector takes it up yet another notch, bringing you one step closer to the true movie theater experience. Digital projectors have come down in price, especially the mirror-based DLP projectors, which can be purchased for under a thousand dollars. Even these cheaper, smaller ones deliver a 2K image which is huge and still as uniquely attractive as anything you would find on a flatscreen TV.
