Sterling silver rings are durable and beautiful when polished to a mirror finish, but many people find that the ring they bought online or in a store isn't a perfect fit. Resizable Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is easily resized because of its low melting point. To resize the ring, a jeweler will melt it and solder it back together for the appropriate fit.

Limits

While most rings can be resized, there is a point at which jewelers will not resize a ring. If a ring needs to be altered by more than one size, jewelers will not resize it because the integrity of the ring is called into question. Likewise, a sterling silver ring can only be resized once or the integrity of the metal is compromised. Have a jeweler measure your finger before you buy.

Refinishing

While resizing sterling silver jewelry is relatively easy, there is still risk involved and some jewelers prefer not to work with the metal. The refinishing process to make the ring look uniform requires specialized equipment that not all jewelers have on the premises.

Sterling silver rings with gemstones can be more difficult to resize and in some cases they are not considered resizable. Rings that have channel-set gemstones or diamonds or invisible-set stones cannot be resized because the process of heating the ring and molding it back together can make the stones pop out.

Some sterling silver rings lack their original finish once the ring has been resized, but it is usually relatively unnoticeable. There is a chance that resizing the ring can make it less durable or more prone to warping and stretching.
