Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Vs. Jeep Laredo

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the Grand Cherokee Limited are two of four trim levels for the sport/utility vehicle from Chrysler LLC. The Laredo is the base model; the Limited is the next step up. The Overland is the luxury model with the SRT8 the Cherokee's performance package. The Grand Cherokee has been produced since 1993.

  1. The Basics

    • The Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

The Laredo and Limited are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission and sit on a 109.5-inch wheelbase. Both vehicles are 186.7 inches long, 73.3 inches wide and stand a tall 67.4 inches. They weigh a hefty 4,261 pounds depending on the number of options ordered. Both come equipped as either two-wheel or four-wheel drives.

    The Original Laredo

    • The 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo was Jeep's base model

The Laredo was originally a mid-level trim option above the Cherokee base model. But the base sold so poorly it was dropped in 1996 and replaced with the Laredo. It also dropped the Limited from the top tier to mid-level status. The 1990's Laredo model featured power windows and locks, cruise control and five-spoke aluminum wheels.

    The Laredo Today

    • The 2009 Laredo features all-terrain tires, roof rack, a trip computer, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with fingertip audio controls and six-speaker CD/stereo system. Laredo options include rear backup camera, parking sensors, sunroof, power passenger seats, remote ignition, leather upholstery and heated front seats.

    Laredo Power

    • Interior of the 2005 Laredo

The standard powerplant for 2009 Laredo is a 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 that generates 235 pound-feet of torque. An optional 305-horse, 4.7-liter V-8 providing 335 pound-feet of torque also is available. The V-6 obtains 16 mpg in the city and 18 on the highway. Four-wheel-drive versions get 14 in the city and 19 on the highway.

    The Original Limited

    • The 1996 Grand Cherokee Limited

As the premium model from 1993 to 1996, the Limited featured leather seats, optional power mirrors, seats and sunroof, heated seats and exterior mirrors, an on-board computer, cast aluminum wheels and a remote keyless entry feature.

    Today's Limited Features and Power

    • The Limited carries the same features as the Laredo as well as its former top-level premium package options. It's also equipped today with a driver's seat memory system and heated rear seats. Standard on the 2009 Limited is the 305-horse, 4.7-liter V-8. Available as an option is Chrysler's 357-horse, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 generating 389 pound-feet of torque. The Hemi gets 13 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. The 1993 to 1996 Limited was powered by a 190-horsepower, 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine.

    The 5.9 Limited

    • Chrysler produced a special-edition 5.9 Limited for only 1998. Less than 15,000 were built. It featured a 245-horse, 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 engine with 345 pound-feet of torque. It reached 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. It also was equipped with heat-extracting hood louvers, mesh grille, 10-speaker Infinity audio system, leather seats and leather accents on the inside doors, shift and emergency brake handle. It also had a leather spare tire cover and a low-profile roof rack.
