What Is the Format for Address Books in Outlook Express?

Microsoft Outlook Express is a mail client that allows users to read their email offline. An important feature of Outlook Express is the address book, which serves much the same function as a hard copy address book. Outlook Express uses its own proprietary format for its address book, but this does not mean that the information is not accessible outside of Outlook Express.

  1. What Is Outlook Express?

    • Outlook Express is a free email program that is integrated into the Windows operating system. It is primarily used to handle home and personal email correspondence. Outlook Express includes stationery applications for special occasions such as birthdays, as well as the capability for users to post to newsgroups.

    Address Book Format

    • Contacts in Outlook Express are contained in what is known as the address book. Although integrated into Outlook Express, the address book is also a stand-alone program. The address book for Outlook Express is stored on the hard drive of the computer in a file with a *.wab extension.

    Importing Contacts

    • In addition to importing a stored address book, which has a *.wab extension, Outlook Express also allows users to import address books in other formats. These imported contacts are then available for use in Outlook Express. The formats that are allowed are Eudora, LDIF-LDAP Data Interchange format, Microsoft Exchange, Netscape, Netscape Communicator and text files in CSV (comma separated values) format. CSV file formats are stored in a spreadsheet based on the Microsoft Excel format, and can be opened and edited within Excel.

    Exporting Contacts

    • The address book for Outlook Express can also be exported for use with other programs or mail clients. The address book can be exported in its *.wab format, or in a number of other formats. The other formats for exporting the Outlook Express address book are Business Card (vCard), Microsoft Exchange and as a text file in CSV format.

    Considerations

    • Outlook Express differs from Outlook, which is included as part of the Microsoft Office package, and is designed to interface seamlessly with the other software programs in the package. Outlook also includes a calendar and scheduling features that are not found in Outlook Express. However, Outlook Express files, including the address book, can be imported into Outlook.
