The state of Florida is known for its mild climate and draws many tourists and retirees, as well as people who would like to live and work there full time. There are a variety of jobs in Florida, with some types varying by location. Overall, the most opportunities for job growth lie in the construction, health care, education, hospitality and retail industries.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the construction industry was booming in Florida, especially in the southwest region, which up until then, had not previously been recognized by many people, compared with other parts of the state. Still, construction is needed to build homes, health care buildings and hotels, to keep up with the population growth and tourism. According to job-hunt.org, the city of Cape Coral's primary jobs are in the construction industry. Other cities that are said to have many construction workers include Deltona, Fort Walton Beach, Jacksonville, Lakeland, Orlando, Naples, Port St. Lucie, Sarasota, Sebastian and Tampa.
Health care openings are consistently on the rise in Florida, as more retirees move to the region for part of the year or full time. Retirees, or those aged 65 and up, tend to require more medical attention than other age groups. Despite the vast number of nurses in Florida, they still are hard to come by as the population continues to grow. The top areas that employ health care workers include Cape Coral, Lakeland, Miami, Orlando, Port St. Lucie, Punta Gorda, Sarasota, Sebastian and West Palm Beach.
Various parts of the state tend to employ more primary and postsecondary education professionals than others, depending upon a couple of factors. First, the amount of education employees is greater in areas that have families. Also, regions that have community colleges and universities are in a greater need of postsecondary education professionals. The area that employs the most education employees in Florida is the city of Gainesville, where the state's largest school, the University of Florida, is located. Also, many families live in Gainesville, so there are elementary, middle and high schools to accommodate the educational needs of children. Other cities generally in need of education employees include Jacksonville, Miami, Pensacola and Tallahassee.
The hospitality industry encompasses hotel, travel, restaurant and tourism work. These areas tend to always be in need of employees, especially during prime tourist season, which may vary by region. For example, the Orlando area tends to be busiest during the summer and holidays, when families take vacations to the theme parks located there. Southern Florida's peak season is during the winter months, when snowbirds come to enjoy the warmer climate. Although hospitality jobs are available all over the state, the top two areas that employ these workers are Orlando and Deltona.
Despite various store closings and cutbacks between 2007 and 2009, the retail industry employs a lot of people across the state of Florida. Again, some times are busier than others, depending upon peak tourist season. Northern and central Florida tend to be in need of retail employees year-round, while companies in southern Florida are in special need of seasonal help between November and April.
