What to Engrave on a Medical Alert

A medical identification bracelet or necklace can be a lifesaver. If the wearer is unable to share important medical information, such as allergies, existing conditions and a medical history, such vital data can be engraved on the alert itself or a phone number that emergency health care providers can call to get that information is clearly included on the alert. If you are at risk of severe allergies, potentially dangerous drug interactions or events such as heart attack, stroke, seizures, cardiac arrest or other potentially life-threatening circumstances, a medical alert can make all the difference.

  1. Emergency Contact Information

    • Companies that provide medical alert bracelets (and necklaces and other similar products) assign an identification number to each wearer/customer. That ID number, along with a 24-hour hotline telephone number should be on every such alert item. This allows a paramedic, doctor or other emergency responder the opportunity to call the 24-hour number, read the ID number and receive important medical information about the patient. It's vital, of course, that you keep the call center updated with your latest medical records and any changes in your condition, such as the addition of new medications to your daily regimen.

    Medications

    • A list of key medications you take could also be included on a medical alert, particularly those that can have potentially negative interactions with other drugs. Blood pressure, steroids, insulin, anti-seizure and anti-psychotic medications should be included.

    Allergies

    • Allergies that are life-threatening or can at least lead to serious medical complications, such as reactions to certain medications or even insect stings, should be labeled clearly on a Medical Alert bracelet.

    Personal Information

    • Many medical alert bracelets have room for your name, address, telephone number and date of birth. This could be helpful, not only to contact someone at your home, but to perhaps help a local hospital deal with your emergency, as it might have your information in its database.

    Emergency Contact

    • If you're unable to provide anyone with information during a medical emergency, your medical alert bracelet could be engraved to include the names and telephone numbers of a spouse, child or neighbor.
