What Information Do You Need to Take the Fork Lift Test?
Before you take the forklift test, you should know the basic checklist that is performed on the forklift before driving, how to go forward and backward, and how to load and unload any truck or container safely. Safety is of the utmost importance when you are using a forklift and taking the test to receive your certified license. Without the test and license, you should not operate a forklift on any premise.

Checklist
-
The forklift driver must know how to inspect the forklift before operating. OSHA has a thorough checklist that some companies use, but a specific company may go with just the basics for the operator and have a mechanic inspect the more detailed mechanics of the forklift. You'll need to Inspect light, forks, horn, tires, shifting seatbelts, and gas or electric cables supplying power to the lift.
Forward Driving
-
Part of the test involves demonstrating the proper procedure for driving forward with or without a load. For example, at corners, you must stop, sound the horn and proceed slowly around corners or through intersections. Forks should be slightly angled upward when no load is present.
-
Backwards Driving
-
The forklift driver must know proper backing safety procedures. Before backing up a forklift, you must sound the horn, look on both sides for clearance and proceed to back up slowly. Drive a lift backwards for a short distance only until the lift can be turned around safely.
Loading and Unloading Trucks
-
The driver is tested on loading and unloading trucks. Before driving a forklift on a truck, you must physically check to make sure the truck wheels are blocked. Empty trucks should be walked to check the floor for any holes or obstructions. When loading on an incline such as a ramp, the forks are angled slightly upwards and when unloading, the forks are angled slightly downwards.
Placing Stock Pallets
-
The forklift driver's ability to placing stock pallets in racks in a warehouse is tested. You must get as close to the rack as you can with the forks and load. Raise the load to the height of the open space. Slowly move the forklift forward to place the stock pallet. Lower the load onto the rack and slowly back up. Lower the forks and turn in the direction you will travel.
Safety
-
You must know basic safety rules about operating the forklift. For example, you cannot allow anyone to stand on the forks for a ride. The forklift must have a protective cage covering the driver. If the truck starts to tip, always remain inside and don't try to jump off. Always sound the horn when in doubt of foot traffic or the presence of another forklift driver in the area.
