History of Rainbow Sandals

Rainbow sandals have the reputation of being some of the most comfortable and durable footwear on the market. Their innovative and original design have made these sandals desirable to a diverse group of people. Originally created for the California surfing community, Rainbows have succeed in their goal for extreme comfort.

  1. History

    • Over 35 years ago, Jay Longley was walking along his local shore in Laguna Beach, California, when he came across a pair of broken sandals. As they laid there littering the beach, Longley began to think about ways to make a better, more durable sandal. In 1974, he decided to start Rainbow Sandals out of his garage making only six pairs per day. Over the past three decades, Rainbows have become one of the most profitable sandals in the world with $30 million in revenue.

    Made With Thought

    • Because Longley was a surfer and beach lover himself, he knew exactly what was needed to make a great sandal. Durability, comfort, and flexibility were the driving forces in his creation. By using different forms of leather, Malaysian rubber and hemp, Rainbows were able to conform to individuals' feet like a second skin.

    The Stickiness Factor

    • In addition to his passion driving the success of the company, Longley used premium products to create the durability and quality guarantee on his sandals. By using triple layers of glue to bind the soles and 2,000-pound nylon tested webbing to prevent breakage, Longley created a shoe that was made to stick to your feet through sand, mud or water.

    Rainbow Growth

    • Rainbows have grown from their six-a-day production line to demand of 5,000 pairs per day. Although the success did not happen overnight, Longley kept reinventing his styles and innovations until the shoe finally caught a wave into the mainstream market. Sizes and colors range across the board as Longley continues to create new products.

    Breaking Them in for Life

    • Rainbows come with a lifetime guarantee and are 100 percent brand backed. If a sandal breaks due to weak stitching or sole separation, the corporation will repair the sandal or send out a new pair.
