Sun Rays Vs. Tanning Beds

Although tanning has been shown to have many negative effects on skin, many people continue to tan in order to get that sun-kissed look--and how they tan varies. There is no definitive answer as to which is better or safer, but tanning in a salon versus tanning in sunlight carry very different characteristics. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. A Difference in Rays

    • Harmful ultraviolet rays are in two categories: shorter-length UVB (ultraviolet B) rays and longer UVA (ultraviolet A) rays. Although the sun gives off both rays equally, tanning beds have the ability to limit the amount of UVB rays your skin is exposed to, which is one difference between these two methods. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that tanning beds are automatically the safer option, as they still expose your skin to both harmful rays, just in a different proportion.

    Availability

    • Another difference between these two tanning methods is their availability. Depending on where you live, tanning under natural sunlight is a luxury not always available throughout the year. Tanning in a salon, of course, can be done all year. It's also much more convenient to take a quick 30-minute trip to a tanning salon than to plan a trip to the beach or another outdoor activity.

    Differences in Safety

    • There is also a great difference in the amount of safety precautions. If you opt to tan in natural light, safety precautions should and may include wearing sunblock and using a clean beach towel. Tanning in a salon may carry a higher risk of germ exposure, depending on how well the salon regulates its cleanliness. Although there are state and federal regulations placed on tanning salons to upkeep cleanliness and hygiene, many don't always abide by them and some have been shut down due to poor upkeep. When tanning in a salon, always make sure to check that it follows regulations to protect you from exposure to germs spread by other tanners.

    Both Have Risks

    • There isn't enough research that can give a definite answer as to which one is better. However, tanning beds and natural sunlight are both bad for your skin. Both can cause premature aging, wrinkles and skin cancer, so when gauging which is safer remember that they both can produce the same dangerous results.

    An Alternative to Both

    • Both of these processes have the same safe alternative. If you want to avoid the damaging effects of tanning beds and sunlight but still want that dark tan, try using self-tanner. If you frequent a tanning salon, it may even offer spray sessions to give you that all-over tan without the hassle of having to do it yourself.
