Augmentin is a prescription medicine similar in nature to penicillin, and like penicillin, is an antibiotic. 1. Common Side Effects

      • Nausea, throwing up, and diarrhea are the three most common side effects that Augmentin users experience. Generally, these side effects are believed to be minor, and usually fade within a few days. If you have any of these side effects, however, and find them to be troublesome or persistent, you should notify your doctor.

      Serious Side Effects

      • Occasionally, people who take Augmention might experience some side effects that are potentially more serious. Some of these side effects include seizures; swollen, peeling, blistered or red skin; severe diarrhea; chills; fever; sore throat; dark urine; vaginal irritation or discharge; confusion; bloody stools; stomach cramps; stomachache; yellowing of the eyes or the skin; and abnormal bleeding or bruising. If you notice any of these side effects, you should get emergency medical attention to have them checked out.

      Allergic Reactions

      • Allergic reactions can also be a possibility with Augmentin users. Allergic reactions are considered to be severe side effects of the medicine. Some signs to beware of include trouble breathing; the lips, tongue, face or mouth becoming swollen; tightness of the chest; skin rash; itching; and hives. These symptoms call for immediate medical assistance.

      Caution

      • Some medical conditions might require dosage changes or specialized tests in order to safely be taken with Augmentin. You must inform your doctor of your medical history, and particularly of conditions including mononucleosis, kidney or liver disease, jaundice and hepatitis. If you are allergic to the following antibiotics, your doctor must be notified: cephalexin, cefdinir, cefuroxime and cefprozil.

      Warning

      • Antibiotics can often lead to the side effect of diarrhea. Diarrhea can occasionally indicate a more serious medical problem, such as the development of a new infection. This is possible with Augmentin. You must be particularly careful if you experience diarrhea that is very watery or contains blood. If you notice those signs, you should immediately cease using the medication and contact your physician.
