Physical Properties of Zinc Sulfate

Zinc sulfate is a versatile chemical that is used in many materials and for a number of purposes, including medicine, skin care products, fertilizers and supplements. Under the right circumstances and handling, zinc sulfate can be an extremely useful element.

  1. Function

    • Zinc sulfate is used in the medical field to treat a low zinc level, or zinc deficiency. It is also used to provide the required zinc amounts in animal feeds. It is used in fertilizers to provide a source of zinc for crops and plants. It's used as a corrosive inhibitor in smoke stacks, as a critical ingredient in the production of rayon fiber, and as an ingredient in flame-proof material. In some cases, it can replace zinc oxide, depending on its use.

    Benefits

    • Zinc sulfate is a very effective method for treating zinc deficiency, causing a person's zinc level to rise significantly when taken as a supplement. Almost all fertilizers use zinc sulfate because of its positive benefit to plants. Both over-the-counter and prescription acne medicines contain zinc sulfate, as well as other skin care products, because of its ability to kill microorganisms on the skin.

    Other properties

    • Zinc sulfate is a chemical compound that has been studied by scientists. As with these types of compounds, there are several physical properties that may not be mentioned when talking about the uses of such chemicals. Zinc sulfate is a crystalline powder, making it similar in texture to table sugar. It will melt at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. It is water-soluble, and when it is dissolved in water it is considered an acid with a PH of 7.0. Though a reaction to other chemicals and substances is not a usual occurrence, it is possible in some circumstances.

    Warnings

    • Though it can be useful for many purposes, zinc sulfate can be a dangerous irritant and pollutant if used or handled incorrectly. If contact with zinc sulfate is made with eyes or skin, severe irritation may occur. If inhaled, it will cause irritation of the throat and nose. Medical attention may be required for any of these occurrences.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Because zinc sulfate can be harmful if used or handled improperly, it is important to take the necessary steps to avoid such occurrences. Zinc sulfate is most commonly found as a water-soluble powder. To avoid inhaling this powder, wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. Wearing gloves, goggles, and a mask is also a safe bet when mixing, dispensing or handling zinc oxide in its liquid form.
