Nioxin hair products are often used on individuals who are dealing with hair loss, whether it is chronic or acute. The Nioxin company manufactures a line of haircare products, particularly scalp and hair cleansers. The company is operated out of Georgia, and Nioxin products are generally sold in beauty salons. As with any type of beauty and health products, there are some possible negative side effects associated with the use of Nioxin.

The focus of Nioxin hair products is to encourage the growth of healthy, strong and shiny hair. The company's ideals are based on the belief that a strong and nourished scalp promotes good hair growth. Some signs of an unhealthy scalp include seborrhea, extreme oiliness and dandruff. The purpose of Nioxin is to provide a strong scalp base for hair to grow. The products consists of a specialized blend of minerals, vitamins and special active ingredients (all of which aim to replenish the hair follicles).

Nioxin products are not exclusively for individuals who are suffering from either acute or chronic hair loss. Nioxin also focuses on individuals who suffer from limp, fine, chemically-damaged and dry hair types. The products have therapeutic and preventative functions, and work to reverse permanent hair damage.

There are three main stages to the Nioxin hair treatment system. The first stage is shampoo, followed by conditioner, and finally the intensive scalp treatment. All of these products are comprised of antioxidants and vitamins, as well as special ingredients that work to eliminate harmful DHT (dihydrotestosterone) out of the scalp. DHT has long been linked to male pattern baldness and even baldness in females.

There are some possible side effects that are occasionally associated with the use of Nioxin products. Everyone reacts to products differently, and some individuals run the risk of experiencing negative allergic reactions to Nioxin. However, the ingredients are non-prescription and are generally very gentle and mild, so bad side effects are rare. People who are sensitive to certain chemicals or who have allergies to herbal botanicals can experience allergic reactions as a side effect of Nioxin. Some signs of allergic reaction include facial and mouth swelling, irritation, flaking of the scalp, redness, and breaking out into hives. Propylene glycol is one of the ingredients in Nioxin products, and many people are allergic to it.

Many shampoos and conditioners (as well as other types of hair products) contain animal byproducts such as laureth sulfates and sodium lauryl. These harsh detergents are known to result in irritation of the scalp and even sometimes hair loss. Nioxin products contain neither. As a result, hair loss as a side effect of using Nioxin is virtually nonexistent.
