Dietitians work in the food industry as they help to assess healthier and more appropriate menus for people especially in hospitals or patients in other medical settings. Dietitians work with clients regarding food counseling issues, helping them to gain more awareness of what they eat. The salary will range based on factors such as location, job setting and years employed.

Payscale shows that a dietitian with one to four years experience can expect to earn an average hourly salary between $12.25 and $19.04. The Bureau of Labor Statistics from May 2008 shows that the average salary for a dietitian is $24.75 an hour or $51,470 a year. The lower tenth percentile makes around $15.13 an hour while the upper tenth percentile earns about $35.29 an hour.

Other top paid industries include federal executive branch (OES designation), home health care services, vocational rehabilitation services and medical and diagnostic laboratories. The annual average salary ranges between $58,720 and $65,970 at these other industries.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the top paying state for dietitians is Delaware with a median yearly salary of $62,260 or $29.93 an hour. Other top paying states include Maryland, New Jersey, California and Hawaii. The average salaries fluctuate between $59,390 and $60,500 a year or between $28.55 and $29.09 an hour.

The Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick, Maryland Metropolitan Division is stated to be the top paying metropolitan area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the average annual salary for a dietitian in this area is $83,320 or $40.06 an hour. Other top paying metropolitan areas include San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara and Oakland-Fremont-Hayward in California; Waterbury, Conn.; and Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner, Maine. Average yearly salary for dietitians range from $69,380 up to $78,760 a year.
