Wavemaster is the name of a series of heavy bags for boxing and martial arts training marketed by Century Martial Arts. The classic Wavemaster is a portable free-standing unit that can be set up for use in indoor and outdoor gyms. Its relative low cost (generally less than $200) makes it an affordable addition to a commercial gym or a home workout area.

    Structure

  1. The striking area of the Wavemaster bag is made of 4-inch-thick foam in a durable vinyl covering. Some models are marked with as many as 10 scoring zones. The article "Wavemaster Punching Bags" (see Resources) cites this as a beneficial feature because it helps fighters pinpoint their strikes and develop different effective combinations. The unit's hollow circular base is make of flexible polyethylene. The user fills the base with water or sand for stability.
  2. Free-Standing Advantage

  3. For those assembling home gyms, the greatest advantage of the Wavemaster is its free-standing design. Most heavy bags require mounting on ceilings or walls, using brackets, springs and chains. This usually involves major construction, and the mounting is permanent. Mounted bags often send vibrations through small buildings when they are struck, meaning a fighter has the potential to annoy family members or shake pictures off walls during his workout. Because the Wavemaster is stabilized by its base, it can be quickly set up in almost any location without the support of a building rafter or stud. Adding to the convenience is the base's rounded shape, which allows a user to easily roll it to a different location without having to completely drain the base of its sand or water.
  4. Height and Weight Adjustable

  5. The Wavemaster has eight height settings, ranging from 47 inches to 68 inches. This allows users of different sizes and ages to reach the striking zones and get the greatest benefit from their workouts. The hollow base can be filled to the desired stability weight. A stronger kicker or puncher may need to fill the base to its maximum of 270 pounds to keep it steady, whereas a youthful martial artist may need to fill it only halfway.
  6. Disadvantages

  7. Customer responses on the Wavemaster website are generally positive. Some, however, have noted that, even with the base fully loaded, the bag tends to wobble and scoot across the floor when placed at its highest height setting. It was also cited as being unusually noisy when struck, and the upper-level height adjustments did not always hold in place during intense workouts.
  8. Models

  9. The Wavemaster comes in different designs and sizes, including the "Kid Kick" and "Kid Punching" models for youth, and the XXL model for taller fighters. The smallest model is the "Lil Dragon," designed for small children, which has a base capacity weight of 170 pounds.
