A fitness and nutrition consultant administers a nutritional assessment for his clients and informs them of basic nutrition principles. He serves as the nutrition subject matter expert to clients. He develops and presents diet plans for his clients that meet their individual needs. He also might plan menus if employed at a prison, hospital, school or university. Additionally, he creates and maintains records related to his clients.

To work as a fitness and nutrition consultant, a candidate should have a bachelor's degree in dietetics or a related field from an accredited college or university. For additional credentials, the candidate can choose to become a registered dietitian (RD). In the United States, an RD is considered the authority on dietary health. After completing a four-year degree program, a candidate must complete a 900-hour internship program and pass an examination to become an RD. He also must complete continuing education credits every five years to keep his license current.
